Let’s start by telling us about your business.

My consulting business helps entrepreneurs develop their ideas into successful business plans. Having a business plan that works with the current economic environment can be difficult, but I feel that my services are able to help many different kinds of businesses succeed.

Q: Please tell us how you make sure your customers will become raving fans of your company?

I am always honest with my clients. I don’t just say what they want to hear. If they are looking for someone to sugarcoat things, I’m probably not the one to help them. I believe in being direct and firm, but also in being kind. Too many people are rude and thoughtless today.

Q: Please tell us the one thing that separates your business from the competition?

I have a wealth of business information that I can draw upon to help my clients achieve their goals. I am also going to use this information as I develop my own company. I have an extensive business background and the skills to show for it.

Q: And to finish this section, please tell us what is the one major key to your company’s success?

The one major key to my success is that I know how to push on through adversity. When I had cancer, I felt hopeless at the beginning. I then came to realize that you have to have the attitude that you are going to beat the disease. I like to say that when you are confronted with testicular cancer, you can either run or fight. I chose to fight and I feel that this helped me conquer the disease.

Q: For our readers just starting to build a company, what advice can you give entrepreneurs just starting out with a new venture?

Many people would say that this is not a good time to start a company, but I think that the economy the way it now presents an opportunity. There are many new niches in the marketplace that a company can exploit. There are also certain types of business that can be considered “recession-proof,” like home healthcare and auto repair. If you can put your time and effort into a business creatively, you may find that you are ready to start your new business now. You should of course keep in mind that this is a risky time to start a business, perhaps now more than ever.

Q: For entrepreneurs seeking to build a business as successful as yours, what one big piece of advice can you give them when times get a little challenging?

You have to set yourself up for success. Don’t assume that you will not succeed. I believe that if you feel this way, you’re only going to shoot yourself in the foot. Having a strong belief in yourself can help you push through difficulties and come out on the other side with more knowledge and experience. With this new experience, you can go forward to a new challenge.

Q: In today’s fast-changing business environment, how do you stay abreast of things?

I stay in close touch with my professional network. I often find out more interesting news from them than I would if I read a newspaper or magazine. This is especially true of local events that aren’t necessarily covered by publications. By relying on my local network, I am also building relationships that I feel are helpful when I am looking for assistance.

Q: What is your “Why”? In one sentence, why do you get up in the morning?

I love to help people. This is one of the reasons why I spend so much of my time working at OneBall. I like to know that my knowledge and experience can help people through one of the most difficult times in their lives. I also help people in my business activities, especially my freelance consulting clients. I have always been interested in finding out what I can do for others.

Q: In one sentence, what is the most important thing one has to do to be a great leader?

I think that the most important aspect of being a great leader is being honest with your employees. If your employees can’t trust you, they will always be watching their backs and they won’t work well like that. They need to know that what you say is true to the best of your knowledge. They also need to know that you have their interests in mind and that they are more than cogs in your machine.

Q: In one sentence, describe how important your customers are to your business?

My clients are the best. Most businesses can’t operate without clients or customers, so they should be well taken care of. The last thing that you want to do is to drive clients away and have them end up with one of your competitors. If this happens, you have to take a close look at what happened that you can make it right again.

Q: In one sentence, describe a positive way that technology can make the world a better place?

Technology helps people connect. It’s been hugely helpful with the mission of OneBall. We connect cancer patients and survivors all over the world. Without technology, people would be alone with their problems and not have that inherent support system.
Another positive aspect of technology is that it’s easy to find and share information. I think that being able to find out anything within seconds is awesome. The one danger of this is that some people take everything they read on the Internet too seriously. It’s not always fact-checked.

Q: In one sentence, tell us how something positive to motivate our readers?

My favorite positive business quote is “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Winston Churchill said this. No matter what happens to you, you need to have the strength and persistence to get out of bed and take the world by storm. You need to know how to process failure and how to keep it from burying your hopes.
My other favorite business quote is “There is no such thing as failure. Failure is just life trying to move us in another direction.”This is a saying by Oprah Winfrey. Sometimes it is hard to learn from failure, but this is a good way to overcome it.

Q: In one sentence, tell us how you start your day to get ready?

I have a rotating slate of activities that I do first thing in the morning. It depends on how I’m feeling. Sometimes I exercise and sometimes I meditate. I think it’s a good idea to be flexible and to do what is right for yourself at the moment rather than tying yourself down to an artificial schedule.
One thing that I’d like to try to make my morning routine less stressful is to cut back on the amount of caffeine I have each day. I have started cutting out caffeine after noontime and this has helped me sleep better, which in turn has improved my mood and my ability to handle things at work.

Q: In one sentence, describe how you handle rejection and setback?

Everyone has to deal with setbacks and rejection. It hurts, but you have to know how to stop taking things personally. Unless it’s accompanied by a personal attack, and that does occasionally happen, you can let the other person’s frustration roll off you. Someone’s reaction to you says more about them than it does about you.
Setbacks can be dealt with by learning from your mistakes. As soon as you can, sit down and lay out what happened and how you can fix it next time. It may be as simple as being more patient and not rushing your ideas before they’re ready. It may be more complicated than that. Either way, you need to be ready to bounce back.

Q: In one sentence, describe what your hiring philosophy is?

I believe in checking references. Not every employer checks them, which really surprises me. Hiring a new person can be such a leap into the unknown without checking their references. I’ve made a few poor hiring decisions that resulted from not checking references in the past, but I have resolved to have my human resources department check them every time.

Q: In one sentence, describe how you keep your sanity in a competitive business environment?

Especially right now, life is very stressful. I have come to rely on meditation to help me out. I use an app called Calm that makes it easy for anyone to learn to meditate. When I meditate, I feel more centered and I have the mental space to come up with new ideas. It’s amazing how many thoughts are running through our heads every minute of the day, but meditation helps you focus on what is important.
